To add a widget to an iPad Home Screen, touch and hold an empty area until the app icons jiggle, tap the Add button, choose an app and widget size, then tap Add Widget. You can then move, remove, edit, or stack the widget. The steps below also explain how Home Screen widgets differ from Today View and what to check when a widget or its controls are missing.

## What you need before adding an iPad widget

Before you start, check that you have:

- An iPad running iPadOS 15 or later. Home Screen widgets were introduced with iPadOS 15; the available widgets and controls can vary by newer iPadOS release.
- The app that provides the widget installed on the iPad. For example, a weather widget requires a weather app that offers one.
- An available widget from that app. Not every iPad app includes a widget, and an iPhone app may not provide an iPad widget.
- Enough open space on the Home Screen for the selected widget size.

A widget does not replace its app. It displays selected information and usually opens the associated app when you tap it. If you recently installed or updated the app, open it once before checking the widget gallery; some apps do not register their widget until their first launch.

## How to add a widget to the iPad Home Screen

Add the widget from the Home Screen, not from the iPad Settings app. The widget gallery lists the apps and widget sizes currently available on your iPad.

1. Go to the Home Screen page where you want the widget.
2. Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen until the app icons begin to jiggle. This puts the Home Screen into edit mode.
3. Tap the Add button, shown as a plus sign, near the upper-left corner. The widget gallery opens.
4. Browse the suggested widgets or select an app from the list. When available, use the search field to find an app.
5. Swipe through that app’s widget styles and sizes. The preview shows how much space each option uses.
6. Tap Add Widget. The selected widget is placed on the current Home Screen page, usually near available space.
7. Drag the widget to the position you want while the icons are still jiggling. The surrounding app icons move to make room within the grid.
8. Tap Done in the upper-right corner, or tap the Home Screen, to finish editing.

The widget should remain visible after the icons stop jiggling. Tap it to test it; many widgets open their app or a specific section of it.

## How to move, resize, edit, or remove the widget

To move a widget, touch and hold it until the Home Screen enters edit mode, then drag it to another position or Home Screen page. Drag it toward the edge of the display and wait for the page to change, then release it in an open grid location.

To change the information shown by a widget, touch and hold it and choose `Edit Widget`, if that command is available. The available choices depend on the app. A calendar widget might let you select a calendar, while a weather widget might let you choose a location. Make the change, then tap outside the widget or tap Done.

Widget sizes are selected when you add the widget. Some widgets offer small, medium, and large layouts, but not every app offers every size. If the widget does not provide a resize control, remove it and add it again using another size.

Removing a widget does not delete its app, but it does remove the widget from the Home Screen. Confirm that you are acting on the widget, not the app icon, before choosing the removal command.

To remove a widget, touch and hold it, tap `Remove Widget`, and confirm. The app remains installed and can still be opened normally. You can add the widget again later from the widget gallery.

## How to use widget stacks and Today View instead

A widget stack lets several widgets share one Home Screen space. To create one manually, touch and hold a widget, drag it directly on top of another widget of the same size, and release it. Swipe up or down on the stack to switch between its widgets.

To remove or reorder widgets in a stack, touch and hold the stack and choose `Edit Stack`. Delete or reorder widgets using the controls available on your iPadOS version.

A Smart Stack is a prebuilt stack that can show different widgets based on factors such as time, location, or activity. Use it like any other stack and edit its contents when iPadOS provides the `Edit Stack` option. Widgets in a stack must use compatible dimensions; a small widget cannot be stacked with a large one.

Today View is separate from the Home Screen. Swipe right from the left edge of the Home Screen to open it and see widgets in a dedicated panel. These widgets do not occupy space among your app icons. Depending on your iPadOS version and settings, you may be able to keep Today View visible on the first Home Screen page, but its widgets still do not sit directly in the Home Screen grid.

Home Screen placement follows the iPad’s grid. You cannot position a widget at an arbitrary pixel location, put it on top of an icon, or force it into a gap smaller than its layout requires. Orientation and the number of app columns can change the available arrangement, so a widget may shift when you rotate the iPad.

## Why the widget you want is missing or will not add

If the widget gallery or Add button does not appear, make sure you are editing the Home Screen rather than viewing an app folder or Today View. Touch and hold an empty part of the Home Screen until the icons jiggle, then look for the plus-sign Add button. On some iPadOS versions, the button appears in the upper-left corner only after edit mode starts.

If the app is absent from the gallery, check these points:

- Confirm that the app is installed on the iPad, not only available on another device.
- Update the app from the App Store. The developer must supply an iPad-compatible widget.
- Open the app once, sign in if required, and return to the widget gallery.
- Update iPadOS through Settings if the app’s current widget requires a newer release.
- Search by the app’s name; the widget may not be in the suggested list.

If the widget appears but will not add, clear space on the target Home Screen page or choose a smaller size. The grid may not have room for the selected layout. Try adding it to another page, then move it later.

Some widgets need permissions or app data before they can display useful information. A weather widget may need location access, and a calendar widget may need calendar access. Allow the relevant permission in Settings or inside the app, then check the widget again. If the app does not offer a widget at all, iPadOS cannot create one for it; use Today View, an app shortcut, or the app itself instead.

## Conclusion

You have finished when the widget remains on the selected Home Screen page after the app icons stop jiggling and displays the expected information when you tap it. If it is missing, update both the app and iPadOS, open the app once, confirm the required permissions, and check the widget gallery again. Once added, keep it in the grid, move it to another page, edit its settings when supported, or stack it with a same-size widget to save space.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can I add a widget to any place on the iPad Home Screen?

No. Widgets must fit the Home Screen grid, so they can go only where there is enough room for the selected size. You cannot position one freely between individual icons or overlap other items.

### Will removing a widget delete the app?

No. \`Remove Widget\` removes only the widget from the Home Screen. The app and its data remain on the iPad.

### Why does my app have no widget on the iPad?

The app may not provide an iPad-compatible widget, or its widget may require an app or iPadOS update. Install updates, open the app once, and check the widget gallery again. If it still does not appear, the developer has not made that widget available for your iPad.
