Jake Whitman is the person friends and family call before tech support. After years of untangling Windows settings, iPhone glitches, and dying laptop batteries, he writes guides that get you back to using your device, not fighting it.
Troubleshooting
“Preparing Automatic Repair” means Windows found a startup problem and opened the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). If it appears once and Windows reaches the sign-in screen, recovery may have worked; if the PC keeps restarting to the same message, use WinRE’s reversible tools first—Startup Repair, Safe Mode,
Troubleshooting
Windows 11 is usually stuck on “Restarting” because an update, driver, damaged system file, or external USB device has blocked shutdown. Wait while the PC shows activity, disconnect nonessential peripherals, and use a forced shutdown only if the screen and keyboard are completely unresponsive. If Windows still will not start,
Battery Life
Leaving a healthy modern laptop plugged in most of the day is generally safe and will not endlessly overcharge the battery. When the battery reaches its target level, the charging system stops actively charging it and the laptop draws most of its power from the adapter instead. The main long-
Troubleshooting
To check storage space, open your device’s built-in storage settings: Windows uses Settings > System > Storage, a Mac uses System Settings > General > Storage, an iPhone uses Settings > General > iPhone Storage, and Android devices usually use Settings > Storage. Each screen shows how much
Battery Life
Managing power settings means choosing how your laptop balances performance, convenience, and energy use. For longer battery life without making the computer frustratingly slow, start with a comfortable brightness level, a shorter display timeout, Balanced mode, and fewer unnecessary background tasks; keep a less restrictive profile for plugged-in work.
Mobile Devices
Tablet software updates replace or repair the code that runs your tablet or its apps. Installing an official, supported update is usually worthwhile: security patches close known weaknesses, bug fixes improve stability, and major operating-system updates can add features and compatibility. Updates can also change the interface, use more
Malware
A legitimate update should come from the application’s built-in updater, the software maker’s official website, or a trusted app store. Before installing, check the prompt, publisher, exact website domain, HTTPS connection, version, and digital signature when one is available. If the source is unfamiliar, inconsistent, or impossible
Troubleshooting
To find reliable online help, describe the problem precisely, check whether the advice fits your exact product or situation, and test only a low-risk change. Start with official or otherwise reputable sources, then compare dates, evidence, assumptions, and independent confirmation before you act. Stop and contact official or professional
Troubleshooting
Finding professional help means stopping risky DIY work, preserving your data and evidence, and choosing a provider qualified for the specific problem. Contact a professional when the next step could erase data, expose an account, damage hardware, or make the cause harder to identify—and when sensible fixes keep failing.
Mobile Devices
To clear cache and data on an iPhone, first check which apps and files use the most storage, then remove targeted items such as Safari website data, app downloads, or rarely used apps. Offload an app when you want to keep its documents and data; use Delete App only after
Technical Jargon
Understanding tech language means identifying what a term describes, what job it does, and how it affects your device or service. For example, opening a website on a phone involves hardware, an operating system, a browser, a network connection, a server, and often cloud services. Once you can tell these
Troubleshooting
To identify a resource-heavy application, open Windows Task Manager or macOS Activity Monitor while the slowdown is happening and sort CPU, memory, disk, network, or GPU usage. The likely cause is the application that stays near the top while you repeat the action that triggers the problem, not a
