To make links open in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or another supported browser instead of Safari, change the default browser in Settings. On current iPadOS versions, go to Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Browser App, then select your preferred browser. This affects links opened from apps such as Messages and Mail; opening Safari directly still opens Safari, and the change does not affect Safari’s search engine or Private Browsing settings.

## What to check before changing the default browser

Before you start, check these prerequisites:

- Install your preferred browser from the App Store. Supported choices depend on the browser developer and the iPadOS version, but commonly include Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Brave, and DuckDuckGo.
- Update the browser to its latest available version. An outdated browser might not appear as an eligible default app or might not work correctly after you select it.
- Use an iPad running iPadOS 14 or later. Apple added default-browser selection in iPadOS 14, so iPads running earlier software do not show the setting.
- Make sure you can change app settings on the iPad. A school- or workplace-managed iPad, or an iPad with parental-control restrictions, might block this option.

If you have not installed the browser yet, install it, open it once, and update it through the App Store if an update is available. If the iPad has not been updated for a long time, install the latest iPadOS update supported by the device before troubleshooting the setting.

## How to change the default browser on iPad

On current iPadOS versions, Apple places the setting in the Default Apps menu.

1. Open `Settings`.
2. Tap `Apps`.
3. Tap `Default Apps`.
4. Tap `Browser App`.
5. Select Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or another browser shown in the list. The selected browser becomes the default immediately.

On some earlier iPadOS versions, Apple placed the setting in the browser’s own settings page:

1. Open `Settings`.
2. Scroll down and tap the browser you want to use, such as `Chrome` or `Firefox`.
3. Tap `Default Browser App`.
4. Select that browser.

If `Default Apps` is missing, update the iPad and check again. If the browser’s settings page appears without `Default Browser App`, update the browser first. The browser might not support the feature on that iPadOS version, or an administrator or parental-control setting might have blocked it.

## How to make sure links now open in your chosen browser

Test the setting by tapping a link in another app. Do not use the Safari icon as the test: opening Safari directly always opens Safari, even when another browser is the default.

1. Open `Messages`, `Mail`, Notes, or another app containing a web link.
2. Tap a normal web link.
3. Confirm that your selected browser opens. For example, if you selected Firefox, the link should open in Firefox rather than Safari.

If the link still opens in Safari, return to `Settings` \> `Apps` \> `Default Apps` \> `Browser App` and confirm that the intended browser is selected. Update both iPadOS and the browser, then restart the iPad to clear a temporary handoff problem.

Some apps show links in their own built-in browser instead of handing them to the system default. Use that app’s share button, `Open in Browser` command, or an option such as `Open in Chrome` when available. If links from several unrelated apps still open Safari, verify the selection, update the software, and restart the iPad.

Changing the default browser does not change Safari’s search engine. Safari’s search-engine setting controls the service Safari uses when you search from its address field; it does not determine which app opens links. Private Browsing is separate as well: it controls whether a Safari session saves normal browsing history and related data, not which browser handles links.

## Why the option is missing or links still open in Safari

The `Default Browser App` option can be missing because the iPadOS version is outdated. Install the latest iPadOS update supported by the iPad, then update the browser from the App Store.

The browser must also support default-browser selection. Not every browser app qualifies on every iPadOS release, and an older app version might not register this capability. Install the latest version and check the Default Apps menu again.

Restrictions can hide or block the setting. Screen Time restrictions, parental controls, and configuration profiles on school- or workplace-managed iPads can prevent changes to default apps. If the iPad is supervised, an administrator might need to change the policy; you might not be able to override it in Settings.

An individual app can also open links in its own built-in browser instead of using the system default. Use that app’s `Open in Browser` or share option when available. If links from several unrelated apps still open Safari, verify the selected browser, update the software, and restart the iPad. If the setting remains unavailable, the iPad’s software version or management policy is the likely limit.

## Conclusion

Select your browser under \`Settings\` > \`Apps\` > \`Default Apps\` > \`Browser App\`, then tap a link in Messages or Mail to confirm that it opens there. Install and update the browser before changing the setting. If the browser does not appear or the option is missing, an outdated iPadOS version, an unsupported browser version, or a school- or work-management policy is likely responsible. This setting changes which app handles links from other apps; it does not replace Safari or change Safari’s search engine or Private Browsing settings.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can I set Chrome or Firefox as the default browser on any iPad?

You need iPadOS 14 or later, an installed and updated browser that supports default-browser selection, and an iPad that is not blocked by a restriction or management profile. The available choices depend on the installed apps and the iPadOS version.

### Why does Safari still open when I tap the Safari icon?

That is expected. The default-browser setting controls links opened through other apps. It does not change what happens when you open Safari directly.

### Does changing the default browser change Google or another search engine?

No. The default browser determines which app opens links. Safari’s search-engine setting determines which search service Safari uses, and the two settings are independent.
