To set up Google Classroom on an iPad, install the Google Classroom app, sign in with the Google account connected to your school, and join a class with the code from your teacher. Teachers can use the same app to open existing classes or create a class if their school account allows it. Check the active account before you begin: a personal Gmail address may open automatically even when your school uses a separate Google Workspace account.

## What you need before setting up Google Classroom on your iPad

Have these items ready before opening Classroom:

- An iPad connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- A reasonably current version of iPadOS that can install the current Google Classroom app. If the App Store says the app requires a newer version, update the iPad through Settings if your school or family allows it.
- Access to the App Store and enough free storage to install the app.
- Your school Google account and password, if your school provides one.
- A class code from your teacher if you are joining as a student. Class codes are usually a short combination of letters and numbers and are case-sensitive in practice, so enter them carefully.
- Teacher or administrator permission if you plan to create a class. Some school accounts allow teachers to create classes only after an administrator enables Classroom.

If your school uses a special sign-in page, single sign-on, or two-step verification, keep those details available. Do not use a personal Gmail account unless your teacher or school specifically told you to use it.

## How to install Google Classroom and sign in on an iPad

Install the official Google Classroom app from the App Store, then verify that it is using the account your school provided.

1. Open the `App Store` on the iPad.
2. Search for `Google Classroom`.
3. Select the app published by Google and tap `Get` or the download button. Confirm the download with Face ID, Touch ID, or your Apple Account password if prompted.
4. Open Google Classroom after the installation finishes.
5. Tap `Get started` or `Sign in`, depending on what appears on the screen.
6. Choose the school Google account you were given, or tap `Add account` and enter its email address and password.
7. Complete any school sign-in, verification, or permission screens. Classroom may ask to send notifications; allow them if you want alerts for announcements, comments, and assignments.
8. Check the account avatar or initial shown in the app. Confirm that it is the school account, not a personal Gmail address.

If Classroom opens under the wrong account, tap the account picture or initial, choose `Add another account`, and sign in with the school account. If the app shows an account list, select the school address before opening a class. You can remove the wrong account from Classroom's account switcher, but do not remove a school account from the iPad or erase school-managed data unless your administrator tells you to.

Google apps can share signed-in accounts on an iPad. The account shown in another Google app does not always match the account Classroom is using, so check the account inside Classroom.

If you want notifications, allow them in Classroom and confirm the iPad permission at `Settings` \> `Notifications` \> `Classroom`.

## How to join a class or create one as a teacher

Students and teachers use different paths after signing in. Follow the path that matches your role.

### Students: join with a class code

1. Open Google Classroom and confirm that the correct school account is active.
2. Tap the `+` button, usually near the top-right corner.
3. Tap `Join class`.
4. Enter the class code supplied by your teacher.
5. Tap `Join`.
6. Wait for the class card to appear on the Classroom home screen, then tap it to open the class.

The code must come from the teacher for that specific class. A code from another class, an old class, or a different school account will not work. If your teacher sent the code in an image or message, enter it manually rather than adding spaces or punctuation.

### Teachers: open an existing class

1. Open Google Classroom and verify that the teacher account is active.
2. Look at the Classroom home screen for the class card.
3. Tap the class card to open its `Stream`, `Classwork`, and `People` areas.

If the class is missing, tap the account picture and check that you signed in with the account that owns or was invited to the class. The class may also be archived, hidden by a school policy, or associated with another account.

### Teachers: create a class

1. Open Google Classroom with your school teacher account.
2. Tap the `+` button.
3. Tap `Create class`.
4. Enter the class name. Add a section, subject, or room only if those fields are useful to your school.
5. Review the school-use notice or terms shown on screen.
6. Tap `Create`.

Classroom should open the new class and display its Stream. You can share the class code with students and add work from the `Classwork` tab. If `Create class` is not available, your school administrator may have disabled teacher-created classes. Ask the school’s Google Workspace administrator for the approved process; do not bypass the restriction.

## How to tell whether Google Classroom is fully set up

Setup is complete when the correct account can open the class and its main sections.

Check these items:

- The correct school account appears in the Classroom account menu.
- The class card appears on the home screen.
- The `Stream` tab opens and shows the class name, announcements, or the normal empty-class message.
- The `Classwork` tab opens. Students should see assigned or posted work when the teacher has added it; a new class may have no assignments yet.
- An assignment opens when you tap it. Students can view its instructions and attachments; teachers can see the controls for creating or reviewing work.
- The `People` tab shows the teacher and, when permitted, classmates or other class members.
- Notifications are configured as needed. Open the Classroom account menu, choose `Settings`, and review notification options. Also check the iPad permission at `Settings` \> `Notifications` \> `Classroom`.

A brand-new class can be empty and still be set up correctly. The essential checks are the class name, the correct account, and the ability to open `Stream` and `Classwork` without returning to the sign-in screen.

## What to do when Google Classroom will not let you sign in or join

Most setup problems come from the wrong account, an incorrect class code, or a school policy. Use the section that matches the problem.

**The school account is missing.** Tap the account picture in Classroom and choose `Add another account`. Enter the complete school email address, including the school domain, and finish the school’s sign-in process. If the account is not recognized, contact the school or district administrator. They may need to create the account, enable Classroom, or reset access. Do not substitute a personal Gmail address unless the school approves it.

**The class code is rejected.** Confirm that you tapped `Join class`, not `Create class`, and ask the teacher to read or resend the current code. Check each character and remove spaces before or after the code. Confirm that the school account is active. A teacher can reset or replace a class code, so ask for a new one if the original has been changed or disabled.

**Classroom opens under the wrong account.** Tap the account picture, switch to the school account, and reopen the class. If the account is not listed, add it from the account menu. Do not join the class from the personal account and assume the membership will transfer; it may not.

**The app cannot be installed or is unavailable.** Check the iPad’s iPadOS version, available storage, internet connection, and App Store restrictions. If your school manages the iPad, an administrator may control app installation. As a fallback, open Safari and go to `classroom.google.com`, then sign in with the school account. Safari may provide the core Classroom functions even when the app cannot be installed, although some app features and notifications may differ.

**The school blocks access or creation.** A missing `Create class` option, an account that cannot access Classroom, or a school-domain error can result from administrator settings. Ask the teacher or school technology office for the approved next step. Do not bypass management profiles, install an unofficial app, or delete school data to force access.

## Conclusion

The setup is working when the school account is active, the class appears, and you can open its \`Stream\` and \`Classwork\` tabs. Keep personal and school Google accounts separate, and check the active account before joining another class. If the app is restricted or unavailable, use Safari as the fallback; persistent account and permission problems require help from the school administrator.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can I use Google Classroom on an iPad without the app?

Yes. Open Safari, go to \`classroom.google.com\`, and sign in with the school Google account. The website provides the main Classroom functions, though app-specific notifications and some interface details may differ.

### Why can I see a class but not its assignments?

Open the class’s \`Classwork\` tab and confirm that you are using the account enrolled in the class. The teacher may not have posted assignments yet, or the work may be scheduled for a later date.

### Can I join a Google Classroom class with a personal Gmail account?

Only if the teacher or school allows personal Google accounts. Many schools restrict classes to managed school accounts, so use the school address when one has been provided.
