An iPad stuck on “Preparing Update” usually has a power, Wi-Fi, storage, or damaged-download problem—not a problem with your personal data. Leave it connected to power and Wi-Fi if the screen is still changing; if it has stopped responding, check the basics, force-restart it, then delete and redownload the update. Do not erase the iPad unless Apple Support or a later recovery step specifically requires it.

## Is your iPad actually stuck on “Preparing Update”?

This message appears after iPadOS downloads an update and checks, unpacks, and prepares it for installation.

Preparing Update
```
Symptom
Preparation can take several minutes. Larger updates, low storage, a busy Wi-Fi connection, and an older iPad can make it take longer. No single time limit proves that the process has failed. A moving progress indicator, a changing screen, or a restart to the Apple logo indicates that the iPad is still working.
Treat the iPad as stalled when the message remains unchanged for an unusually long period, the iPad stops responding normally, or it repeatedly returns to the same screen after restarting. If it has been there only a short time, do not interrupt it. Keep it connected to its charger and a reliable Wi-Fi network. Disconnecting power or Wi-Fi at the wrong moment can leave the update incomplete.
If the iPad responds, do not repeatedly tap the screen or press buttons. Check Apple’s service status, power, storage, and network before restarting. These checks are safe and can identify a problem that is preventing preparation from finishing.
## Check these three things before forcing a restart
Start with checks that do not change your data or the installed system. These steps apply to current iPad models and supported iPadOS updates. You need the iPad passcode for some Settings changes, but you do not need Administrator or `sudo` access. A backup is not required for these initial checks, although make one before further troubleshooting if the iPad remains usable.
### Check Apple’s systems
Open Apple’s System Status page in Safari. Look for an incident affecting software updates, Apple Account services, or related infrastructure. If Apple reports an outage, wait until service is restored before trying the update again.
### Check power and storage
Connect the iPad directly to a working charger. If the battery is low, let it charge before retrying. Then check available storage:
```text
Settings > General > iPad Storage
```
Settings path
If storage is nearly full, remove or offload large items you can restore later, such as downloaded videos or unused apps. Do not delete photos or documents unless you have confirmed that they are backed up or otherwise available.
### Check Wi-Fi
Use a stable private Wi-Fi network rather than a weak or interrupted connection. Move closer to the router if possible, and do not switch networks during the update. A captive portal, VPN, or filtered network can interfere with Apple’s update servers. Temporarily disconnect a VPN and complete any sign-in page in Safari before retrying.
If Apple’s services are available, the iPad has enough storage, and it is charging on stable Wi-Fi, force-restart it only when the screen has genuinely stopped responding.
## Restart the iPad, then delete and download the update again
A force restart does not erase your apps, photos, or documents. Use the procedure for your iPad model. Press the buttons in the stated sequence; do not hold every button at once.
For an iPad without a Home button:
1. Press and quickly release the volume button closest to the top button.
2. Press and quickly release the other volume button.
3. Press and hold the top button until the Apple logo appears, then release it.
For an iPad with a Home button:
1. Press and hold the Home button and the top button together.
2. Keep holding them until the Apple logo appears, then release both buttons.
Let the iPad start normally. If it returns to the update screen and remains responsive, remove the incomplete update:
```text
Settings > General > iPad Storage > iPadOS update > Delete Update
```
Settings path
The update can appear under a version number instead of “iPadOS update.” Tap it, choose `Delete Update`, and confirm. This removes the downloaded update package, not your personal data or the currently installed version of iPadOS.
If the update does not appear under iPad Storage, it may already have been removed. Return to Software Update and download it again:
```text
Settings > General > Software Update
```
Settings path
Tap `Download and Install`. Keep the iPad connected to power and Wi-Fi while it verifies and installs the replacement file. If the download fails again, record the exact message rather than repeatedly restarting the process.
## How to confirm the update worked
After a successful installation, the iPad restarts and returns to the Lock Screen or Home Screen. It should no longer remain on “Preparing Update,” and the same update should not continue to appear as though it has never been installed.
Check the installed version here:
```text
Settings > General > About > iPadOS Version
```
Settings path
You can also check Software Update:
```text
Settings > General > Software Update
```
Settings path
The expected result is that the screen shows the installed iPadOS version and does not ask you to install the same update again. If it says an update is available, check About to see whether the version changed before downloading anything again.
If the iPad returns to “Preparing Update,” repeat the storage check and delete the downloaded update again. A recurring failure can result from a damaged update package, insufficient free space, a network problem, or an issue that requires updating from a computer.
## What to do when the iPad still will not update
If the iPad can still start and respond, back it up before using a computer. Use iCloud Backup from Settings, or connect it to a Mac or PC and create a local backup. If the computer asks whether to trust it, unlock the iPad and approve the prompt. An encrypted local backup can include more sensitive data, such as saved passwords and Health data, but you must remember the backup password.
On a Mac with macOS Catalina or later, connect the iPad with a USB cable, open Finder, select the iPad in the sidebar, and choose `Check for Update` or `Update`. On a Windows PC, install or open the current Apple Devices app if available; on older supported setups, use iTunes. Select the iPad and choose the option to check for an update. Choose `Update`, not `Restore`, when both options appear. `Update` attempts to reinstall iPadOS while preserving your data.
Keep the cable connected, and do not let the computer sleep during the process. If the computer cannot detect the iPad, try another cable or USB port and update the computer’s Apple device software. If the update completes, verify the iPadOS version in `Settings > General > About > iPadOS Version`.
Recovery mode is appropriate when the iPad cannot start normally, remains stuck after the standard restart and redownload steps, or the computer cannot complete a normal update. Connect it to the computer and open Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes. Use the same button sequence for your model to enter recovery mode, but continue holding the required button until the recovery screen appears. When the computer offers `Update` or `Restore`, select `Update` first.
Do not choose `Restore` or erase the iPad prematurely. Restore deletes the device’s contents. Use it only after a current backup is confirmed, or when Apple Support directs you to do so and you understand the data risk.
If recovery mode cannot complete an update, the iPad repeatedly returns to recovery mode, or it is not detected by more than one reliable cable or computer, contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Give them the exact error shown by the computer and explain which steps you have already tried.
## Conclusion
If preparation has only just begun, leave the iPad charging on stable Wi-Fi. If it is clearly stalled, check Apple’s service status, storage, and network, then force-restart the iPad and delete and redownload the update. Before using a Mac or PC, make a backup when possible; choose \`Update\` rather than \`Restore\`, and do not erase the iPad unless Apple directs you to do so.
## Frequently Asked Questions
### Will force-restarting an iPad erase my data?
No. A force restart restarts an unresponsive iPad without removing apps, photos, or documents. Data loss becomes a concern when you choose \`Restore\`, erase the device, or use another recovery action that explicitly deletes its contents.
### Can I use the iPad while it says “Preparing Update”?
If the iPad responds, you can check Settings, but do not repeatedly interrupt the update. Keep it connected to power and Wi-Fi. Force-restart it only when the screen has remained unchanged long enough to indicate a genuine stall.
### Why can’t I find the update under iPad Storage?
The download may already have been removed, the iPad may not have completed the download, or the update may be listed under its version name. Check \`Settings > General > Software Update\` to see whether it is available to download again.
### Does choosing “Update” in Finder or iTunes delete the iPad?
The \`Update\` option is intended to reinstall or update iPadOS without erasing your personal data. Make a backup first whenever the iPad can start normally, and do not select \`Restore\` unless you accept that it erases the device.
