Universal Control lets you use one Mac keyboard and trackpad or mouse to control a nearby iPad. After you enable it, move the pointer across the edge of the Mac’s screen to reach the iPad; the keyboard follows the pointer, and you can drag supported content between compatible apps. The Mac and iPad remain separate devices: Universal Control does not extend or mirror the Mac display.

## Check that your Mac and iPad can use Universal Control

Before connecting the devices, confirm that they meet Apple’s compatibility requirements and use the required account, software, and wireless settings.

- Mac: MacBook introduced in 2016 or later; MacBook Pro introduced in 2016 or later; MacBook Air introduced in 2018 or later; Mac mini introduced in 2018 or later; iMac introduced in 2017 or later; iMac Pro; Mac Pro introduced in 2019 or later; or Mac Studio.
- iPad: all iPad Pro models; iPad introduced in the sixth generation or later; iPad Air introduced in the third generation or later; or iPad mini introduced in the fifth generation or later.
- Software: macOS Monterey 12.3 or later on the Mac and iPadOS 15.4 or later on the iPad.
- Account: both devices must use the same Apple Account, with two-factor authentication turned on.
- Wireless features: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff must be turned on for both devices. Keep the devices close together and connected to the same Wi-Fi network when possible.

On the Mac, open `System Settings` and confirm that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on. Open `General > AirDrop & Handoff` and turn on `Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices`.

On the iPad, open `Settings` and confirm that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on. Open `General > AirPlay & Continuity` and turn on `Handoff`. On some iPadOS versions, this setting appears under `General > AirPlay & Handoff`.

If either device uses a different Apple Account, Universal Control will not establish the usual trusted connection. Sign in to the same account on both devices before continuing.

## Turn on Universal Control and connect the two screens

Enable Universal Control on the Mac, add the iPad from the display settings, and arrange the devices so the pointer has a natural path from one screen to the other.

1. Open `System Settings` on the Mac.
2. Select `Displays`.
3. Click `Advanced`.
4. Turn on `Allow your pointer and keyboard to move between any nearby Mac or iPad`. This enables Universal Control.
5. Turn on `Push through the edge of a display to connect a nearby Mac or iPad` if you want to establish the connection by pushing the pointer against the edge of the Mac’s screen. Turn on `Automatically reconnect to any nearby Mac or iPad` for future connections.
6. Place the iPad beside the Mac, with their edges roughly aligned. Put the iPad on the same side of the Mac that you plan to use in the display layout.
7. On the Mac, open `System Settings > Displays` and click `Add Display` or the display button, depending on your macOS version.
8. Select the nearby iPad under the option for linking a keyboard and mouse or connecting a keyboard and mouse. The iPad should appear as an available nearby device.
9. Move the Mac pointer to the edge nearest the iPad and continue pushing against that edge. A white animation may appear at the edge. Keep moving until the pointer crosses onto the iPad.
10. Open `System Settings > Displays` and drag the iPad’s display tile to match its real position if the pointer crosses at the wrong height. Select `Done` when the arrangement is correct.

The iPad remains an independent iPad screen. When the connection works, the Mac pointer appears on the iPad, and a small bar or pointer indicator at the bottom of the iPad screen shows that it is being controlled.

## Move the pointer, type, and drag files between devices

Once Universal Control is connected, the Mac’s keyboard and pointing device control whichever screen contains the pointer.

1. Move the pointer to the edge of the Mac display next to the iPad.
2. Push through that edge until the pointer appears on the iPad. Move it back across the corresponding edge to return to the Mac.
3. Click an app or text field on the iPad, then type with the Mac keyboard. Keyboard shortcuts generally follow the device receiving the input, although Mac and iPad apps do not support identical shortcuts.
4. Use the Mac trackpad or mouse to click, scroll, select text, and interact with iPad apps. On an iPad, a trackpad click acts as a tap, while a secondary click can open context menus where the app supports them.
5. Select text, an image, or another supported item on the Mac and drag it toward the iPad screen. Continue across the screen edge, then drop it into a compatible iPad app, such as a document, message, or image-editing app.
6. To move a file from the iPad, touch and hold or select the item in an iPad app, begin dragging it, move the pointer across to the Mac, and drop it into a compatible Mac app or Finder window.
7. Use copy and paste when dragging is not supported. Copy the item on one device, move the pointer to the other device, and paste it into an app that accepts that content.

Universal Control shares input; it does not merge the devices’ storage or app environments. Drag-and-drop and copy-and-paste work only when the source and destination apps support them. Large files and some protected content may need to be transferred with AirDrop, iCloud Drive, Messages, or another supported method instead.

## Know what Universal Control is not

Universal Control shares the Mac’s keyboard and pointing device with an iPad. It does not stream the Mac desktop to the iPad, turn iPadOS into macOS, or combine the two screens into one larger Mac workspace.

| Feature | What you see |
| ----------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Universal Control | Separate Mac and iPad screens controlled by one keyboard and pointing device |
| Sidecar | The iPad acts as an additional Mac display, showing Mac windows |
| Screen mirroring | The iPad or another display shows the same Mac content rather than a separate workspace |

Choose Universal Control when you want to use iPad apps alongside Mac apps while keeping each device independent. Choose Sidecar when you want to place Mac windows on the iPad or use the iPad as a Mac display, with Apple Pencil support available in compatible Sidecar workflows.

Universal Control does not make every keyboard shortcut identical across platforms. The Mac and iPad continue to run their own operating systems, use their own apps, and maintain separate files, notifications, audio settings, and device controls.

## Make Universal Control reconnect reliably

You know the connection is working when the iPad appears in the Mac’s display settings, the pointer crosses the selected screen edge, and typing affects the device containing the pointer. If the iPad does not appear or the pointer stops at the edge, check the setup in this order.

1. Bring the Mac and iPad close together and place them so their physical positions match the arrangement in `System Settings > Displays`.
2. Confirm that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on for both devices, even if the devices use another connection for internet access.
3. Confirm that Handoff is enabled on both devices and that both use the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication.
4. Open the Mac’s `System Settings > Displays > Advanced` settings and confirm that `Allow your pointer and keyboard to move between any nearby Mac or iPad` is enabled.
5. On the iPad, open `Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity` and confirm that `Cursor and Keyboard` is enabled. If your iPadOS version uses the older menu name, look under `General > AirPlay & Handoff`.
6. In the Mac’s display settings, remove the iPad connection if it is listed but unresponsive, then add the iPad again from `Add Display`.
7. Lock and unlock the iPad, then wake the Mac. Try pushing through the configured screen edge again.
8. Restart both devices if the connection still does not appear. After they restart, verify the account and wireless settings before attempting the connection again.

Do not repeatedly pair the keyboard or trackpad to the iPad while troubleshooting. That changes the accessory’s active connection and can make it harder to tell whether Universal Control is working. If you need the iPad to display Mac windows rather than share input, stop using Universal Control and set up Sidecar instead.

## Conclusion

Check the supported models, software versions, Apple Account, two-factor authentication, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff first. Then enable Universal Control in the Mac’s display settings, add the iPad, and arrange the display tiles to match the devices’ physical positions. When the pointer crosses the edge and appears on the iPad, the same keyboard and trackpad or mouse control both devices. Leave automatic reconnection enabled for future sessions, and use Sidecar instead when you want to extend or mirror the Mac display.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can Universal Control work with an iPad and Mac on different Wi-Fi networks?

Wi-Fi must be enabled on both devices, and Apple’s nearby-device connection also depends on Bluetooth and Handoff. Put both devices on the same Wi-Fi network when possible, especially during initial setup, because it removes a common source of connection failures.

### Does the iPad need to be unlocked for Universal Control?

The iPad needs to be awake and available for the pointer and keyboard connection. If it stops responding, unlock or wake it, then move the pointer across the configured edge again.

### Can I use Universal Control with an iPad and two Macs?

Yes, a compatible Mac can control nearby compatible Macs and iPads, subject to Apple’s device, account, software, and wireless requirements. Arrange the screens in the Mac’s display settings so each pointer path matches the physical layout.
